Serving as one of the earliest mechanical precursors to the modern vending machine, these countertop dispensers were a staple of 19th-century British pubs and taverns. When a patron dropped a half-penny into the slot and pressed the plunger, the internal mechanical trip-lever released the double-hinged lid, popping open the tobacco compartment.
